In December, there was an interesting article in the International Herald Tribune, which discussed how crop yields in Malawi were improved through fertilizer subsidies (i.e. the title of the article, "Ending famine, simply by ignoring the experts" -- the "experts" being those who advised the Malawian government not to give such subsidies).

As well meaning as this campaign may be, it ignores the real reasons why the majority of farmers in developing countries are poor. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released their study entitled “ Fish Piracy: Combatting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing,” after a meeting in April 2004 at Paris where OECD countries determined to take a more comprehensive look at Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
