Introduction by Julian Morris, Editor

What is sustainable development? Is it desirable and if so how can it be encouraged? Why are some countries rich and others poor? What is the relationship between economic growth, human health and welfare, and conservation of the environment? Can economic development continue indefinitely? What can we learn from countries where economic growth has stalled? Are we consuming too many of the earth's resources and thereby undermining humanity's ability to continue its progress? Will global environmental agreements protect the environment and aid human progress? Do we need stronger environmental constraints on free trade? These are some of the questions that authors in this book seek to answer.
