The Government department responsible for sending aid to the Third World has admitted spending almost £50 million in five years on projects in Britain.

Concerns over DfID's UK spending has been raised by the think tank the International Policy Network (IPN), which has compiled a list of schemes which it believes should not be benefiting from DfID cash.

Caroline Boin, IPN's project director, said: "It is ridiculous for DfID to spend tens of millions of pounds right here in the UK. Foreign aid should be just that – money spent overseas, not wasted on wishy-washy feel-good projects in the UK.

"The majority of these DfID funded projects are little more than brainwashing aimed at schoolchildren, including preschoolers, with aims like crafting 'global citizens'."
