Smug WTO foes no friends of poor

Anti-free-traders -- including world leaders who refuse to remove trade barriers and who promote environmental policies that sustain famine in poor countries -- should take their children and move to these poor countries. There, living under the laws that they advocate, they would be without credit cards or jobs, sleeping in mud huts, cooking with firewood (from chopped trees), and inhaling indoor smoke -- while dealing with corrupt dictators and excessive regulation from their own government.
Coupled with the escalating tariffs and subsidies applied by the First World, these anti-free-traders would find themselves unable to escape the poverty that we in the poor countries know only too well.
Feeding People, Generating Income, Protecting the Environment: The Role of Agricultural Technologies
IPN Opinion article
Investment in agricultural research and development in the past few decades has helped to improve the lives of most Indians through enhanced and affordable food supply, boosted incomes for millions of our farmers, and reduced the incidence of famine and starvation despite massive population increases in the past few decades. Nevertheless, food insecurity and malnutrition still persists in India. The causes for poverty and hunger are varied and complex, but experts concur that sustainable agricultural development will be critical in meeting future food needs, reducing poverty and protecting the environment.
African food for thought
IPN Opinion article
Zambia\'s president would like to protect his nation from the \"poison\" of GM maize (Zambia slams door shut on GM relief food, October 30). Unfortunately, corpses don\'t talk, so we\'ll never know if the famine victims of Mwanawasa\'s irresponsible policy agreed with him. Some citizens voted with their feet by looting over 500 bags of GM grain from a shortage shed in Mumbwa.
