Argentina

Argentinean healthcare provision is relatively decentralised due to the long involvement of trade unions in financing. The remainder of healthcare financing (43%) is made up by central government. The system has been criticised for is unequal provision.

The pharmaceutical industry is a major part of the Argentine economy. It consists mainly of local subsidiaries of the big multinational companies, but also has growing domestic manufacturing capacity. Tariffs on pharmaceuticals are fairly high as are taxes on vaccines, which may be a result of tensions with the USA over global intellectual property rules. Argentina only permits imports from a list of 27 countries.
