Chad

Chad is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world. The country was judged by the UN to have been in a humanitarian crisis since 2001. There are frequent coups d'Ètat which ensure the ruling power focuses more on remaining in power than on building functioning infrastructure like health care. 830 mothers die for every 100,000 live births (compared to 7 in the UK) and average life expectancy is just 46 years old.

Access to medicine and health care is almost entirely dependent on foreign assistance, and the situation is complicated by the harsh desert environment. A 5% tariff on all pharmaceutical imports and an 18% tax thereafter adds to the problems of the sick.
