Ethiopia (excl. Eritrea)

The health care system of Ethiopia was deemed to be ëwholly inadequate' by the US Congress in 2005. Since then, things do not seemed to have improved. Ethiopia has one of the highest newborn infant mortality rates in the world: 15% of children die before they reach the age of 5. Health expenditure per capita is just $4.50 and there is only 1 physician per 42000 people, and most of those operate in the cities. Almost 70 million rural inhabitants have little or no access to medicine or basic healthcare. Imported medicines attract a tariff of 5%, with the exception of vaccines which are tax free.
