Gambia is one of the least developed countries in the world and suffers from extremely poor health care. The country provides 62% of its people with safe water and 37% with adequate sanitation. Health conditions are poor: in 2009, average life expectancy was estimated at only 59 years for women and men.

Hospitals are located around the cities and are underfunded and understaffed. Access to medicine is hampered by a tariff of 5%.
