The Grenadian health care system was hit dramatically by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It was estimated that 69% of the health infrastructure was destroyed. Recovering and rebuilding the health system after such a catastrophe has taken a number of years and, although the response from the international community has helped, the economy is still not at pre-Ivan levels. Surprisingly, tariffs on pharmaceutical imports have not been reduced since then and are at a punitive rate of 12%.
