Guyana

Medical care is available for minor medical conditions. Emergency care and hospitalization for major medical illnesses or surgery is limited, because of a lack of appropriately trained specialists, below standard in-hospital care, and poor sanitation. The health sector is currently unable to offer some sophisticated services and specialised medical services because the technology is unaffordable in Guyana or because the required medical specialists are not available.

One of Guyana's main industries is pharmaceuticals, and many companies privatized in the 1990s. However, access to drugs in the country remains very poor. The government levies an import tariff of 11% and an additional sales tax of 16%.
