Macedonia
Prior to the breakup of the Yugoslav federation, the Macedonian health system was highly decentralized, with the 30 municipalities dealing with provision in their areas and an overarching solidarity fund. The move away from this system has brought some improvements, but it is still lagging behind other EU countries. The country still faces challenges in provision: geographical inequalities between the east and west still exist, as do inequalities between levels of access for rural and urban population.
