Mauritania

Mauritania suffers from many of the typical problems with developing world health care provision. Its main problem is chronically understaffed and under equipped hospitals, having only 11 doctors and 67 hospital beds per 100,000 people. There is limited access to medicine and the country is reliant on foreign aid for much health spending. Most Mauritanians, especially those who live in rural areas, do not have access to modern health care facilities. Nouakchott and the provincial centers have facilities, but even in these locales health care is rudimentary. There is no tariff on pharmaceutical imports, however, customs are highly bureaucratic and time consuming.
