Moldova is the poorest nation in Europe and, according to a survey by DfID, 55% of the population live on an income of less than $2.15 a day. As a result, the health indicators are also poor, with the lowest life expectancy in Europe and relatively high levels of infant mortality. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldovan health budgets came under pressure and infrastructure and equipment deteriorated. These problems persist today. Primary care, especially in rural areas, remains poor.
