Niger

Niger has a very basic healthcare system which is characterised by chronic shortages of staff and lack of resources. Even though the government allocates about 6% of GDP to the health system, 27.4% of overall resources come from external donor funding. It is not clear that the fragile health system has the capacity to absorb this large proportion of donor money.

Communicable diseases are very common, mainly a result of impoverished living conditions, and malnutrition is an aggravating factor for the very high rate of child mortality.

However, the government does not apply any tariffs on medicines.
