Paraguay
The Millennium Goals, which members of the UN committed to meet by 2015, are unlikely to be met in Paraguay. Paraguay has amongst the worst child mortality rates in the Americas. In Paraguay, for every 1,000 live births, 25 children die before reaching their fifth birthday. The weakness of Paraguayan healthcare is a result of a combination of a lack of infrastructure, a relatively low level of spending on health per capita and a lack of human resources. Paraguay only has four doctors and two nurses for every 10,000 people.
The country maintains a relatively high tariff rate on medicines, with rates remaining constant over the last decade.
