Switzerland
Switzerland has amongst the best healthcare systems in Europe, according to the Euro Health Consumer Index, although encroaching bureaucratisation and cost cutting is leading to increased waiting lists and rationing of treatment. It is also a major centre for pharmaceutical research, development and manufacturing.
However, patients in Switzerland have very good access to both innovative and generic drugs. This is partly a result of the countries competitive, insurance-based healthcare system and less reliance on so-called Health Technology Assessments used by peer European nations. As a non-member of the EU, Switzerland uses its own drug approval process, which may speed up access to innovative medicines.
In keeping with its position as a major innovator of medicines, Switzerland does not levy tariffs on drugs. In 2006, it jointly proposed with Singapore and the US that all WTO members should abolish pharmaceutical tariffs.
