International Policy Network, a London-based think tank, said the news [that the globals AIDS pandemic peaked in 1996] justifies abolishing the United Nations AIDS agency and shifting attention from AIDS to more common but equally deadly illnesses, such as pneumonia and diarrhea.
“For years, UNAIDS claimed that it was only a matter of time until the world would succumb to an explosive HIV/AIDS pandemic,” the think tank’s Philip Stevens said. “Today’s figures show that this pandemic simply hasn’t materialized – and won’t.”
