A one-day workshop on Globalisation and the post WTO scenario

Bazaar Chintan,), held its second workshop on Globalisation, the WTO and the current economic environment for students at the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM). The aim of the workshop was to make the participants aware of the nuances and implications of globalisation. More than 500 students participated in a tight six hour long schedule. Bazaar Chintan (Hindi for market concerns) works in the ideas market as a think tank in India. A host of eminent economists on its panel focus their attention on ideas that free society. Bazaar Chintan publishes a working paper series, conducts workshops, publishes in depth sectoral studies, researches issues of contemporary interest and organizes seminars on India's political economy. The group is headed by Professor Bibek Debroy, Director, RGICS, and consists of Professor Julian Morris, IEA, Professor Subhashis Gangopadhyay of IDF, Pramit Pal Choudhary, Foreign Editor, The Hindustan Times, Mohit Satyanand, Entrepreneur, Management consultant, S Prasanna, Director, BEA India, and Amir Ullah Khan, Director, Asia, International Policy Network (IPN).
10:00 - 11:30 Globalization: Your only hope pal! (Speaker: Sauvik Chakraverti )
Mr. Chakraverti was an IPS officer from 1983-89. He then he studied at the London School of Economics, became a was a freelance writer and was then invited by the Economic Times to join their editorial team. In 2000, Macmillan published his book 'Antidote: Essays against the socialist Indian state'. Free your mind: The Centre for Civil Society has published his A beginner's guide to political economy. He won the first Frederic Bastiat Award for journalism promoting liberty in 2002.

11:30-1:00 Trade and Environment: A perception on Sustainable Development
(Speaker: Prasanna Srinivasan)
Prasanna is a Director of BEA India, a management consultancy. He has a postgraduate degree in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and over 13 years of consulting experience, including two years as Director and Head of Consulting at EIU-IMA (the Indian associate of The Economist Intelligence Unit). His clients have included Mobil, Rio Tinto and Eagle Star. He is the author of numerous reports, including a recent study of the Basle Convention on transboundary shipment of hazardous waste.

Mohammad Saqib a Fellow at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Contemporary Studies is an MS in Economics form the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He worked with ICRIER as a Economist before moving to RGICS. Saqib has been a consultant with the World Bank, the UNDP, and the Ministries of Commerce, Environment and Finance. He heads the Indian China Trade Centre that researches and coordinates trade between the two Asian giants.

This documentary traces the major post-Independence economic and policy transitions in India. This documentary has already been screened at many institutions including the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, the CII and Assocham, covered in journals like India Today, The Hindu, The Financial Express, and on television channels such as CNBC Asia, Zee News and Aajtak. Amir Ullah Khan is Director, Bazaar Chintan. He works for the International Policy Network, and has been a consultant with the UNDP, NCAER and an editor and executive Director with Encyclopaedia Britannica.
3:30-4:00 'The Doha development Agenda' - (Bibek Debroy)
Bibek Debroy, Director (Research) Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies is an eminent economist and a foremost expert on the WTO. Educated at the Presidency College, Calcutta and the Trinity College, he has taught at the Gokhale Institute, IIFT and other management institutes. He has been a consultant with the UNDP, World Bank, NCAER, Ministry of Finance, Government of India and the Business Standard. He is currently consulting editor to the Financial Express.
